Maestra española en EEUU, Carolina del Norte.

Teacher from Spain in the US, North Carolina

I work as an Elementary teacher at Avery´s Creek Elementary School in Asheville, North Carolina.
I come with EPI, an Exchange Visitor Program that provides exchange opportunities for K-12 teachers from all over the world. They offer a close support from the beggining of the experience and possibilities for professional growth and cross cultural activities.

As a Dual Language teacher, my main goal is increasing global awareness of the world we live in by developing critical thinking, learning other languages, learning teamwork, using technology safely and responsibly and respecting and appreciating other cultures.
I have created cross cultural curricular instructional time and activities where subjects might become more than curriculum, involving real aspect from different countries and connecting with other schools around the worl. Some of the activities are:
MYSTERY SKYPE
I organized a Mystery Skype game with Illinois and Guatemala. The Instructional Technology Facilitator of Buncombe County School, Kendra Cameron Jarvis, visited a school located in Guatemala last summer to collaborate with Safe Passage association. We have been working together to prepare a very special connection between my fourth-grade students and the students in Safe Passage, Camino Seguro.

HOW TO PLAY MYSTERY SKYPE
Mystery Skype is a 45-60 minute critical thinking challenge that your class takes part in while Skyping with another class somewhere else in the world. Your students' goal is to guess the other school's location (country, state, city, school name) before they guess yours. We do this by asking yes and no questions.

PLAYING MYSTERY SKYPE WITH GUATEMALA
Neither class knew the location of the other and used questioning, geography skills, and critical thinking to figure it out. They had to work in groups with different roles such as: questioners, answerers, filters, runners, lead thinkers of think tank, google mappers, map moguls, lead thinkers and photographers.
My Avery's Creek Students communicated totally in Spanish and discovered the Guatemalan students learn both English and Mayan languages. Towards the end of the session both groups exchanged interesting things about their countries and cultures, such as architecture, animals, mountains, lakes,...My students were very excited about learning new things about their new friends.
REFLECTION ACTIVITIES
After this activity I prepared some reflection activities about the role that they played, the teamwork, new things that they learned and the comparison between both countries.

BUILDING A GLOBAL COMMUNICATION
We are continuing our relationship and collaboration with this school by using different types of communication like Penpal and Flipgrid. We will send short videos that they can answer at anytime over the school year to get them know better.

OTHER CROSS CULTURAL ACTIVITIES WITH MY STUDENTS

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC EXPLORER CLASSROOM
We have participated in a virtual experience with National Geographic Explorer Classroom. My students were able to interact with the expert Daniel Arauz, located in Costa Rica who is protecting the sea turtles. Other schools around the world were connected at the same time.

MYSTERY PENPAL
We had to guess the country of our new friends using our writing and reading skills when we received the letters from my old school in Spain. We answered them back applying the same strategy. After this we are doing a Flipgrid for sharing their favorite books.

MYSTERY ZOOM

During the remote learning, we played a game that I called "Mystery Zoom" using virtual backgroud pictures of different countries. My students´goal was to guess the other students´locations and they could only ask yes and no questions. They had a loto of fun and found out that my picture was my hometown in Spain, Málaga!

I am so proud to say that It has been such an amazing experience that has developed global awareness and helped foster a better relationship between our different cultures.
My students taught me the most important lesson of life showing empathy for others. I feel blessed for being able to work in a Dual Language program that opens doors to new opportunities for my students.
I modestly hope that this experience will help other teachers to understand the importance of global education and bilingual education. The world needs more global citizens.
